Charles Darwin


Charles Darwin was born at Lichfield September 3rd 1758 and died at Edinburgh May 15th 1778.
Possessed of uncommon abilities and activity he had acquired knowledge in every department of medical and philosophical science much beyond his years. He gained the first medal offered by the Aesculapian Society for a criterion to distinguish, Matter from Mucus; and had prepared a thesis for his graduation on the Retrograde Motions of the Lymphatic Vessels in some diseases. He cultivated with success, the friendship of ingenious men and was buried by favour of Dr A. Duncan in this his family vault.

Andrew Duncan


Dr Andrew Duncan M.D.President of the Royal College of Physicians and Professor of Theory of Medicine at Edinburgh. Born in St Andrews, studied medicine at Edinburgh and worked as a ship's surgeon for the East India Company. He founded the Royal Public Dispensary, the Caledonian Horticultural Society and the Edinburgh Lunatic Asylum. He was inspired by the death of the Poet Robert Ferguson in the Bedlam.

John Blackwood editor of Blackwood's Magazine for 33 years. Died 29 October 1879 aged 60.
John Alexander Blackwood his only son. Died at Edinburgh 4th May 1882 aged 25.
Julia wife of John Blackwood and daughter of the Revd. Joseph Blandford rector of Kirkton, Notts. Died Edinburgh 2nd June 1899 aged 69.
Mary Blackwood Porter only surviving child of John and Julia Blackwood married in 1884 Captain Gerald M Porter 7th Hussars. Beloved mother of Aubrey Blackwood Porter and Geraldine Porter cied 27th October 1939.

Here rests what was mortal of Robert Reid. For XXXIII years Crown Architect for Scotland. Who by his eminent professional abilities no less than by his private virtues secured the warm esteem and lasting friendship of a large circle of the most distinguished of contemporaries.
Born 8 November 1774. Died 20 March 1856.

The Great Lafayette

Sigmun Neuberger (The Great Lafayette) 1873-1911. His speciality was dramatic illusion carried out under his stage name. Beauty his faithful companion was given to Lafayette by Harry Houdini. The dog died the week before Lafayette and was buried at Piershill Cemetery. Amoung the floral tributes was one from Houdini.
